I’ve been volunteering with Sty1e Studios on their upcoming VR extraction shooter, Raven Company’s: The Mission, and wanted to share a look at part of the visual direction we’re developing for the project.
This asset is one of three large structures that make up the Kryll Broodspire set, specifically the Kryll Vent. Kyo Tagawa (https://www.artstation.com/sorvel_64) created the original concept art, and I was responsible for taking the asset through the full production pipeline, from high poly, low poly, retopology, and baking.
The model went through several texture iterations, with both me and Annie Cho (https://www.achoanimation.com/copy-of-home) contributing to the texturing process. The base materials for the Kryll Vent were created by Annie in Substance 3D Designer. Through our collaborative efforts, we were able to bring this piece to life while maintaining the visual style with me finalizing the texture. For this asset, I wanted to avoid overly extreme color tones and instead push toward a warmer, more yellow-based palette. This style is slightly outside of my usual comfort zone, which made the process both challenging and rewarding.
Raven Company’s: The Mission is a VR extraction shooter currently in development by Sty1e Studios, with the goal of bringing the extraction shooter genre into VR in a fun and exciting way. The project is still actively in development, with more updates to come soon, including an upcoming Kickstarter campaign.
