Kyo Tagawa created the highlighted concept art. (https://www.artstation.com/sorvel_64). Annie Cho did some of the texture passes as well.
This piece is the Kryll Pillar, another structure created for Raven Company’s: The Mission as part of the larger Kryll Broodspire set. Compared to the Perch and Vent structures, the Kryll Pillar is designed primarily as a spawning structure for the Kryll creatures throughout the world.
I wanted the silhouette and surface detail to feel as though the structure had naturally grown over time rather than being traditionally constructed.
This asset was developed through a collaborative direction. The original concept art was created by Kyo Tagawa (https://www.artstation.com/sorvel_64), while I handled the production process from high poly modeling to low poly/retopology, and baking. The texturing process went through several iterations, with both myself and Annie Cho (https://www.achoanimation.com/copy-of-home) contributing to the final look. Base materials were created in Substance 3D Designer.
One of the more enjoyable aspects of working on these Kryll structures has been exploring shapes, materials, and color palettes outside of my normal comfort zone. The collaborative process helped push the asset further while keeping it visually consistent with the rest of the environment set.
Raven Company’s: The Mission is an upcoming VR extraction shooter currently being developed by Sty1e Studios, focused on bringing the extraction shooter genre into VR.
